APRIL, 2008 NEWSLETTER

This was a great month for habitat and wildlife conservation. Notwithstanding the protection still needed for threatened polar bears, sharks and natural habitat in Eastern and Central Europe were given a mindful nod, nonetheless. The U.S. Congress is working to pass legislation cracking down on illegal shark finning, while the EU has expanded the Natura 2000 network of protected habitats to include prime bird habitat in the Carpathian Mountains. The EU is also working on a proposal to identify hardwood products obtained from illegally harvested rainforests. IKEA has even pledged to ensure 30% of its hardwood products are harvested and produced from sustainable methods.
