September 3, 2010 - The very first United States Postal Service (USPS) green roof building located in midtown Manhattan is proving great success. The nearly two and a half acre eco-friendly Morgan mailing sort facility finished construction on what many say is the latest green roof technology available, about a year ago. It is reported that in its inaugural year, this facility has gone above and beyond expectations of its initial conservation goal.
What a great first year indeed. It is estimated by the USPS that implementing this green roof and other green technology now used at the Morgan facility has saved a minimum of one million dollars. When you consider the initial first year $30,000 savings goal, it speaks volumes about green roof technology and the need for it.
Now, as one of the most innovative green roof buildings and a USPS crowning achievement, all eyes will be on the future. Many environmentalists will undoubtedly be looking for next step the USPS will take in the direction of green roof technology and other ways to save with green modernization.
The massive green roof covers nearly 110,000 square feet and is currently the largest of its kind in Manhattan. One of best components of this building’s green roof technology is that about 90% of the original roof was used to create the new green roof.
Green roof buildings are not only a beautiful alternative to grimy urban roof top views, but they are a great way to reduce impure storm water runoff. The Morgan facility not only built the green roof, but it implemented other ways to save energy by replacing approximately 1,600 windows in order to save more energy as well.
