When it comes to preventive medicine, one of the most effective and healthy things we can do is wash our hands with organic hand soap. All doctors agree that washing one's hands with soap is a cost-effective, non-invasive and highly beneficial way of preventing the spreading germs from one person to another.

If you're like most people, myself included, it's likely you've thought of anti-bacterial soap as being superior, or at least more effective at killing germs, than regular hand soap, whether it be organic or natural. And rightfully so. To distinguish one type of soap from another by referring it is as anti-bacterial, naturally suggests that it does something which other soaps cannot do - kill bacteria. And while it's true that anti-bacterial soap is effective at killing bacteria, it doesn't necessarily mean that organic hand soap not labeled as anti-bacterial hand soap, is any less effective at preventing the spreading of germs.

What makes a soap anti-bacterial is the addition of a bacteria-fighting chemical called triclosan. However, several studies undertaken by reputable groups, including Columbia University, Proctor and Gamble and the U.S. Center for Disease Control, show there is no significant difference between soaps with triclosan and organic soaps when it comes to combating germs. In fact, it is thought that the overuse of anti-biotic hand soaps could help create antibiotic resistant "super germs".

Most doctors agree that the overuse of antibiotics is to be avoided, whether topically or internally. Therefore, it makes sense not to overuse antibiotic hand soaps. Some people prefer to abstain from antibiotic soaps period. However, a study shows that minimal use of antibiotic hand soaps does not help to create antibiotic resistant bacteria. Therefore, if you insist on using antibiotic soaps, please use them minimally.

Otherwise, go with natural and organic hand soap. Organic and all-natural hand soap comes in both liquid and bar form and will not dry out skin with chemical foaming agents. Organic hand soap is also good for the earth, meaning that the manufacturing process does not contribute to pollution. While they are more difficult to find in your local pharmacy or health and beauty store, there are many excellent and affordable organic hand soaps that can be purchased online.
